Spring football: Friday big day for young tight ends, defensive ends

The annual Spring Game is just nine days away and the Bison will hold a restricted scrimmage tomorrow at the Bubble. Most of the starters will be held out, meaning it could be a big day for a bunch of backups looking to impress their way into playing time. Head coach Chris Klieman said a couple of positions of note will be looked at with a keen eye: tight end and defensive end.

At tight end, juniors Connor Wentz and Jeff Illies have pretty well established themselves in regular roles, but you can never have enough tight ends in this offense. So the spotlight will be on redshirt freshmen Ben Ellefson and Matt Anderson and sophomores Nate Jensen and Isaac Lashua. “We want to find out what the other guys can do,” Klieman said. On defensive, a few young defensive ends will get the once over, most notably freshmen Derrek Tuszka and Cole Karcz (pronounced Kartsch) and to an extend sophomore Stanley Jones, who saw the field more last year as the season went along. “We have to get those guys more and more reps,” Klieman said.

The injury list remains crowded, although none of them are considered extensive or serious. Cornerbacks Jalen Allison and Dom Davis have been limited and that’s hurt their evaluation, especially the freshman Davis who is trying to crack the depth chart. The scrimmage will only entail about 30-40 scripted plays.
